When Pain Travels: Is It a Muscle Problem or a Nerve Problem?

Pain is not always tidy. Sometimes it stays in one sore spot. Other times it burns, tingles, zings, or travels down an arm or leg—and that difference matters.

Muscle and joint pain often feels achy, tight, tender, or clearly linked to a movement or position. Nerve-related pain can feel burning, electric, shooting, numb, tingly, or unusually sensitive to touch. Sciatica, for example, can cause pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates from the low back or buttock into the leg and foot. Learn more about sciatica from MedlinePlus.

That does not mean every tingling sensation is the same diagnosis—or that the internet can diagnose it for you. It does mean that a careful evaluation should look beyond the loudest symptom. Where does the pain begin? Does it travel? What aggravates it? Is there weakness, balance trouble, or loss of sensation?

At Laura Brown, PT, I use that bigger picture to help determine whether hands-on therapeutic massage, MLS Laser Therapy, Scrambler Therapy, or referral back to your medical provider makes the most sense. I do not offer one-size-fits-all treatment or a conventional rehabilitation program; care here is focused, individualized, and appropriate for the problem in front of us.

If you have new or worsening weakness, a foot that drags, new bowel or bladder changes, or numbness in the saddle area, seek urgent medical care.
